Parsons grad Sophie Simmons designs ultrafeminine, vintage-cut lingerie inspired by the embroidered Swiss camisoles worn by her mother and grandmother. In fact, her focus on dainty underpinnings was originally prompted by a trip to Switzerland, where she discovered that the shop that had created the beloved garments was no longer making them. Simmons’s catch-all design studio, wholesale outlet, and office is tucked into the sixteenth floor of a Garment District high-rise, where personal fittings are available by appointment. The lingerie is high-end, but the atmosphere is casual, with a makeshift dressing room formed by a screen. Customers shimmy into silk, Italian-cotton, and linen slips, gowns, and panties, while Simmons and her design team work at tables nearby. Simmons was born in France (“dessous” is French for “under pieces”), and her lingerie reflects a European sensibility: The drapey pieces incorporate no artificial padding or wires, and many can also be worn as clothing.
