Profile
Domenico Spano remembers that he was wearing his crisp Carabinieri military uniform when he first met his American wife in Italy. She did not speak Italian; he did not know English. "We communicated through the heart," he confesses. A true romantic, Spano proposed three days later and soon thereafter, the two relocated to the U.S. Inspired by this memory as well as the 1930s Humphrey Bogart look, Spano offers custom-made men’s suits with refined features: broad shoulders, wide lapels, suppressed waists, forward-pleated pants. Suits come in cotton, wool, dupioni silk, cashmere, and vicuña. Transforming the picture from black-and-white to Technicolor are collared shirts in red horizontal stripes and silver silk ties with purple polka dots. Tailoring takes four to six weeks and three fittings. A small selection of customized suits for women and ready-to-wear ones for men are also available. As one salesperson put it, a gentleman is "elegant from the time he wakes up until the time he goes to bed."
