Style mavens and thrift-store junkies used to make pilgrimages to the original Domseys on the Williamsburg waterfront, a 30,000-square-foot behemoth of used and vintage garments. When the building was sold in 2002, the company transferred some of its stock to two much smaller outlets in Brooklyn and Queens. Sourcing its wares from private donations, Domseys’ second incarnation more closely resembles a fluorescent-lighted bargain basement, where old-school neighborhood folk push shopping carts through the store’s wide aisles in search of deals on women’s, men’s, and kids’ casual clothes in good condition. While it might be possible for an enterprising fashionista to create a contemporary look from Domseys’ eighties fake furs and Golden Girls-style sequined gowns, most of the offerings here are workaday basics from brands like Old Navy, Talbots, and The Children’s Place. There’s also a small section of unused, discounted staples like Hanes T-shirts, briefs, and socks.
