To many in the fashion world, Donna Karan is New York. And the Queens native’s three-story flagship store on Madison Avenue marries the city’s energy with a Zen-like setting featuring a bamboo garden and fountain. The sprawling space is also decorated with huge slabs of stone, tall mirrors, and flat screens, and carries the Donna Karan Women’s Collection and the Icons Collection, which encompasses such signature pieces as the wool pencil pant and the jersey wrap dress. As might be expected, there’s a generous stock of handbags, heels, sunglasses, fragrances, and garments for work and evening. But sprinkled throughout the space are also surprising offerings such as vases, candles, giant teddy bears made of Japanese organic cotton, and a luxury children’s collection by Bonnie Young. Both a tailor and stylist are on hand to assist customers, and though prices can soar to four figures, the top floor holds markdowns. — Katie Hintz
