For nine years, Nancy Chinchar climbed the ranks in the fields of education and international product management, yet she was unfulfilled by her work. She finally realized she should find something she liked—and what she liked was her pit bull, Otto. So in 2003 she opened Downtown Doghouse, a cheery and welcoming Chelsea store that offers mostly organic pet items and expert grooming. The small but neatly arranged retail area carries only ethical products—no flexi-lead leashes or dog food from China here. There are collars exclusive to the store, outdoor toys in summer, and goose-down parkas in winter. The three staff groomers have more than 50 years of experience between them, and lead groomer JoAnn Hurtzel won a second-place ribbon in the Groom Olympics in 2002. Grooming services include nail clipping and painting, blueberry facials, and haircuts.

Sidewalk Sale every August, coinciding with the Barney’s sale, with markdowns of 50%-80%.
