Profile
In the British company’s first East Coast store, industrial-recessed lighting illuminates the narrow, brick-walled space and sturdy leather benches and deep armchairs complement the durable footwear. The iconic boots are divided by material (canvas, suede, chambray and even limited-edition pony hair) and displayed in floor-to-ceiling encasements along the store’s walls. The most popular model, the 1460 8I boot, fills the entire back wall and is sold in a variety of colors including Statue of Liberty green and Big Apple red, both exclusive to the Soho store. Originally a working man’s company known for its factory shoes, Dr. Martens has since expanded to produce men’s business wear shoes and ultra-feminine kicks as well as metallic and floral takes on traditional designs. The brand also started producing clothing in spring of 2011—for men there are heritage button-downs, while women can peruse shirt dresses and striped and plaid everyday tees.
