This made-to-measure menswear nook in the foyer of Alphabet City cocktail bar Elsa offers high-end bespoke suits fit for modern-day dandies. Before he turned his attention to tailoring, designer Jake Mueser was acquainted with the Elsa owners from his previous gig as a D.J. at various East Village bars. He set up shop in January 2009 with partner Amber Doyle, decking the tiny black-and-white tiled space with a pair of elegantly suited mannequins and an antique sewing machine. The pair works with British, French, and Italian fabrics, specializing in a gentlemanly, standard-cut suit modeled after sixties Savile Row tailors (though they’ve executed everything from a Victorian silhouette to a bright-green silk ensemble for their diverse clientele). The focus is on personalized, meticulous service, from assisting in fabric choice to allowing time for multiple fittings in their Williamsburg studio. Around a dozen hand-tailored ready-to-wear suits are available for purchase starting at $1,000, with minor alterations offered. A glass display case bears nautical-inspired nickel and brass cuff links, brooches, bracelets, and hand-worked leather belts by Ryan Matthew, slowing bar patrons on their way out.
