Dismayed by the electronic games and flimsy action figures that dominate many toy stores, celebrity makeup artist and mother of four Jeanine Lobell joined forces with three other women to open Enchanted Toys in 2004. The nonprofit store provides tuition assistance for students at a nearby Waldorf school, a learning system that stresses independent thinking and creativity. The labyrinthine shop is packed with hand-carved wooden toys—from an ark’s worth of smooth, stone-size snails, elephants, and alligators to elaborate model train stations to build-your-own castle sets—along with soft cloth dolls, block puzzles, and giraffe puppets. Costumes such as a sequins-heavy mermaid outfits and an ethereal tulle cape stuffed with pastel flower petals are available year-round, and a crafting wall beckons with brightly colored pencils, yarn, and felting kits.
