Believe it or not, when Environment337 opened in 2001, it was the only home goods and personal accessories store on the rapidly gentrifying Smith Street strip. Today, it continues to stand out, thanks to an emphasis on small, fresh, and locally designed; almost like a greenmarket for your home. Co-owners Loren Sosna and Donald W. J. Mulligan have backgrounds in textile design and cosmetics, but their interests meld in the shop’s products, ideal for nouveau Brooklyn living; an aesthetic that responds to the gap between contemporary design and the 150-year-old brownstones many customers call home. Most items, like the Dwell bedding collection, have a refined but artisanal look, with a light, modern spin. Beautiful table linens are block-printed; cotton rugs are classically woven; glassware is hand-blown; lamps are ceramic and metal, some with printed paper shades. There’s a selection of candles, books, note cards, gardening and gift items, too. Brooklyn- and Manhattan-based designers abound, but the owners venture beyond local climes to cull selected wares from across the U.S. and Western Europe.

Key Departments

Beauty Products & Cosmetics

Mulligan’s background emerges in the selection of beauty and grooming products, many imported from Europe. The Slatkin range has body care items. Customers clamor for foreign faves like Marvis toothpaste and Proraso shaving soap.

Local designers dominate the jewelry offerings, which have a particularly contemporary feel. This is the home base for designer Emanuela Duca’s gold and platinum work, much of it custom, as well as the sterling-and-glass pieces of Verre New York.

Children's Clothing

Traditional wooden toys and German stuffed animals sit alongside contemporary children’s T’s.
