No longer in the business of stuffy buttondowns, drab slacks and monochrome ties, Express Men has stepped it up in the design department; the ubiquitous chain now stocks slim cut pants, preppy polos, smart-fitting blazers and other items appropriate for both work and after-hours play. With the help of their Express Design studio on Fifth Avenue, the once-staid brand has added some European flair. As a result, materials have gotten better, styles change more frequently, and prices have headed skyward. Pair cargo shorts with a bright orange polo and braided belt from the Casual Collection for a prep Popsicle look, or match the Producer pant with a textured shirt in Bengal stripes from the Tailored Collection. All the stores are similar in design and utilize bright lights and loud music to bring in younger shoppers; the look is fresh, even if the bass line is deafening. — Jeannette Park
