The Family Store, owned and operated by the Dabas family, was founded by Minerva Dabas in 1980. A welcoming spot on one of Bay Ridge's main shopping avenues, this boxy storefront is chockfull of Middle Eastern delicacies, from Iranian pistachios to Syrian cheese to Lebanese marzipan. Inside, plexiglass containers hold almost 85 varieties of dried fruits and nuts, which means you can find dried blueberries and cantaloupe in addition to the usual apricots and dates. There's a deli counter in the back and an ever-changing menu of freshly prepared foods, such as eggplant moussaka, in addition to familiar pita stuffers. Owner Sam Dabas also offers what he calls "the best crab cakes in the city," homemade from a closely guarded family recipe. — Laura Longhine

For over 21 years, my mother has always enjoyed their dizzying variety of nuts for cooking and baking. The food is to die for! Sam does not lie: his are the best crab cakes in New York (rivaled only by his shrimp cakes). The hummus is light and refreshing. Walking into the store and simply inhaling is a thrill ride for the senses. In our experience, the service has always been friendly and without fault. Their desserts are delicious without saccharine gooiness. The salads are fresh and seasoned to absolute perfection. The meats are of prime cuts and succulent. There is variety in pricing as well, so there is something for everybody. But even for the pricier items on their menu, it is so incredibly worth it, you will gladly part with your hard-earned cash! While they retain their Middle Eastern roots and offer the staples in that cuisine, Sam has expanded the menu too. His deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving was so juicy and flavorful I seriously considered erecting a shrine to the man.
