When a swanky store in the Hamptons offered to buy Lindsay Cain’s chunky stone necklace right off her neck, she knew she could strike gold with a design-your-own jewelry boutique. Until then, the former Sony media specialist had only dabbled in creating glass bead and stone jewelry for herself and her friends, but faced with the city’s sea of conventional, craft store-y bead shops, she decided to open Femmegems to give people a more refined environment in which to express their individual style. Opened in 2002, the whimsical space has played host to Iman, the Olsens, Kyra Sedgwick, Nicky Hilton, and countless bridal parties, corporate types, and jewelry junkies, all of whom have stopped in to custom make baubles. Tarnished gold frames and old-fashioned dressing tables display dozens of color-grouped strands made of coral, jade stones, and peridot beads, which customers can twist into multistrand bracelets or necklaces; hand-carved pendants and other flourishes are optional add-ons. Clients sit at a communal wooden table at the center of the shop, stringing beads and finalizing designs; those with know-how finish their creations with clasps and hooks, while the rest of us can turn to the sales staff for assistance. Pre-made, locally designed pieces are also available.
