First Flight owner Dan Wollock was a successful New York set designer when an ankle injury put his theatrical career on hold. While recovering, Wollock got into music, particularly the guitar, and eventually decided to open a store dedicated to his new love. A steady stream of both new and experienced local musicians now pass through his second-story shop. Wollock has an affinity for vintage guitars like double-necks, lap-steels, and the curvaceous Kay electrics, but the used selection isn’t all retro-chic throwbacks; First Flight’s acoustic selection is all new (as older acoustics tend to warp with age), and a hearty selection of modern, flashier guitars are always on consignment sale. In addition to amplifiers, both new and used, there are enough accessories—think strings, straps, pedals, and picks—to kit out an entire cross-country tour. Customers can try out any model in the soundproof amp room, and the store’s resident technicians can customize, repair, and overhaul just about anything.

First Flight Music School

Three next-door studios house lessons seven days a week, and can also be rented out for practice and rehearsals.
