Profile

Flatiron Wine and Spirits is small, warm, and well-lit, with dusty brick walls and shelves of bare wood. With a primary focus on small-batch producers from France and California, they offer organic and biodynamic wines from all over the world, such as the varietal biodynamic Martian Ranch & Vineyards from Los Alamos, and hard-to-find Kutch Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Spirits from New York City and state, like Greenpoint’s Greenhook Gin, are available as well. The wildly varied pricing ensures that there’s something for everybody—a $15-and-under Grab and Go centerpiece is stocked with lowbrow staples such as Il Conte, while a selection of high-end wines, of which a two-grand bottle of DRC La Tâche sits atop as king of the hill, lie in a locked glass case in the next room. For the aspiring sommelier, Flatiron offers three tastings every weekend, which feature a sparkling wine on Fridays, a region-specific selection on Saturdays, and a spirit or liqueur on Sundays. An expansive and detailed website offers descriptions of every wine and spirit, an envy-inducing blog about the travels of the store’s buyers, and a calendar of tastings.
