A neon sign announces this modestly sized shop from the street, but the inventory inside is far less flashy. Instead you’ll find a strong cross-section of folk art’s various forms; from carvings to paintings to sewn crafts. Near the entrance to shop, which stays open longer than the museum itself, you’ll find seasonal and exhibition-related displays composed of gift and decorative items, alongside a case full of colorful jewelry. An ample book collection dominates the store’s center, with works on quilting and Shaker culture, as well as DIY titles. And though borderline kitsch at times, novelty items like handmade weathervanes, roosters made of recycled farm machinery, and totes made from recycled plastic shopping bags keep the stock feeling fresh. For parents, there’s a small children’s section with low-tech games (jacks, checkers), simple-craft books, and a seemingly random assortment of fun stuff (temporary tattoos, photo mobiles). A nearby branch location at Lincoln Square is twice the size and carries a similar, but not identical, inventory.
