Georgia Tapert is an interior designer by training and fills her narrow Soho shop with supremely tasteful home accoutrements. Panels of preserved moss line the wall behind the register, creating an earthy setting for Tapert’s furniture and carefully chosen inventory of statuettes, vases, picture frames, tableware, and throw pillows. Tapert designs her exclusive Carolina George line of custom-made desks and dining sets, many of which — like a circular cherry-wood side-table that unhinges to become a writing desk and armchair — can be folded or doubled as needed. Everything else in the store reflects Tapert’s eclectic yet sensitive aesthetic, from bamboo-fiber blankets to nineteenth-century porcelain sets to horn-handled silver cigar cutters and bowls made from halved ostrich eggs. The small jewelry collection has both delicate elephant-themed earrings Tapert found while traveling in India and heavier amethyst and rough-cut ruby pendants she commissioned from a Croatian woman right here in New York.
