Considering how fluidly this line’s unique woven-crepe designs drape over its wearers’ lithe frames, it’s no wonder its name reflects a sheer, ethereal presence. Beauties like Julia Roberts, Liv Tyler and Jennifer Aniston choose Ghost creations for red carpet events. Since 1999, Ghost’s Soho store—its only New York location—has been a supernatural fashion force, drawing a stable of regular buyers who relish the decidedly feminine, organic-meets-modern designs. Most dresses feature monochrome or subtly patterned palettes, showcasing the wearer instead of the gown. The label stays loyal to delicate near-neutrals and its signature washed fabric, but the form of each piece is clean enough to remain current for seasons; the georgette dresses, bohemian tunics, and straight linen pants are blissfully free of fussy details and flashy embellishments. With its rosewood floors and softly lit walls, the store, like the clothes, mines the contrast between light and dark, and soft and strong.  — Molly Noonan
