In 1980, now husband-and-wife Allen Gonzalez and Susan Giordano were having trouble finding the perfect size-five shoe for the petite bride-to-be. Voila: the idea for Giordano’s, a designer shoe store specializing in women’s sizes 4 to 5 1/2, was born. Unfortunately located mere meters from the Queensboro Bridge’s on/off-ramp, the most visually appealing thing about this small shop is the shoes. (How can a pair of tiny high heels not be cute?) Carrying well-known brands like Via Spiga, Stuart Weitzman, and Anne Klein, the store has developed a devoted following of dainty-footed fashionistas who refuse to shop in the kid’s department. Gonzalez and Giordano are equally devoted to their patrons, keeping records on which brands fit which customers and alerting them to new stock. After 9/11, the couple closed their Florida store, deciding to focus solely on the New York shop and website; they wanted to keep their business personal and—like most of their clients—small.Sales
