Every nook of this shop is crammed with bikes fit for a Tour de France trainee—or a Central Park cyclist. The vast amount of equipment and avid, hard-core clientele could be intimidating for novice riders, but the staff, all cycling enthusiasts, takes the time to ensure that each customer pedals away with a properly fitted bike—one that’s suited both to body type and recreational yearnings. In addition to mountain and road bikes from makers like Cannondale, Giant, and Merlin, the shop also stocks a solid selection of helmets, shoes, and stopwatches. On-site mechanics repair broken chains, correct frame alignment and assess ill-riding bikes, even if they were purchased elsewhere. Gotham sells a few kids’ bikes, but mainly caters to grown-up riders. Autographed jerseys from cycling greats line the walls to lend a little inspiration.  — Molly Noonan
