It’s hard to miss this furniture shop’s 23 locations scattered throughout the five boroughs. Founded in 1969 on the corner of 13th Street and Third Avenue, the flagship store soon spawned many more—averaging about 5,000 square feet but spanning as much as 20,000—filled with Shaker-style headboards, rolltop desks, mirrored wardrobes, open-back bookcases, entertainment centers, china hutches, and classic bars. Items come in pine, birch, oak, and ash wood and are finished in a choice of twenty stains. Though some are put off by the lack of stylistic variety, others are attracted by the affordable prices and custom consulting services. Most stores are staffed with draftsmen who will work with customers to create anything from radiator covers to entire kitchens. Local delivery and shipment to anywhere in the U.S. is available for a fee.
