In the world of prepster gods, Ralph Lauren may reign supreme, but Tommy Hilfiger is picking up the pace with his well-heeled multi-level flagship boutique. His Soho location opened just months after 9/11—very much in the spirit of Americana that his brand has come to represent. From the minute you step inside, the beach house décor overwhelms—from the seashell and sand displays to the plush natural cotton and seersucker couches. The entry level features Hilfiger’s signature line of classic men’s sportswear: structured blazers in wool and cotton, pastel button-downs, and formfitting chinos. Upstairs, the women’s floor mixes conservative staples like polo shirts, khakis, and espadrilles with unexpected pieces like peasant blouses, frilly dresses, and an impressive selection of casual flats and sandals. Down in the converted basement, the Hilfiger Denim label appeals to a younger, hipper customer—they've even gone so far as to put a non-functioning bar in the corner. Although the price points may be the same as Hilfiger's sportswear collection, but with edgier cuts and trendier pieces—think skinny jeans and bare camisoles—Hilfiger Denim brings a fresh new attitude to the once predictable brand.
