Product Guide

Halcyon the Shop resembles a treehouse, with smooth wood paneling along its record-choked perimeter and Astroturf on the floor (complete with pond-shaped cut-outs). The vibe is far different than that in Halcyon’s beloved former Carroll Gardens location, which was more coffee shop-meets-impromptu dance party than this pure record shop, which DJ Shawn Shwartz opened in 2004. But many loyal fans still come to scour the neat stacks of DJ-centric new and used vinyl. The store carries anything that can fit under the stretch umbrella of dance music: afrobeat, eighties, techno, Hip-Hop, disco, and funk are just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also a smaller selection of CDs and 12 records, as well as a smattering of T-shirts and artwork by local artists. A dual-record DJ stand holds court in the center of the space, and employees host listening parties on Thursday afternoons. And there are regular special events like live broadcasts and even block parties.
