Profile
Around the time Hans Christian Anderson was writing "The Princess and the Pea," Hästens craftsmen began developing beds fit for royalty. Today, the family-owned company does this literally by supplying handmade, ecofriendly beds for King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The majestic clientele offers a sense of the small fortune required to purchase one. Queen-size beds run as high as $23,250, and that’s mere chump change compared to the company's masterpiece Vividus bed and its whopping $69,500 price tag. But word from the royal bedroom is that it's worth it. Hästens beds are stuffed with hypo-allergenic horsehair washed with spring water. In between are layers of anti-static flax cloth and piano-steel quality springs guaranteed for 25 years. To test comfort, the sales staff encourages customers to sprawl out on the floor models and dream of restful nights. If the cost is prohibitive, don’t fret: Down pillows, booties, duvet covers, and pajamas are also available for lesser nobility.
