Upon entering Hello Sari, the urge to put on something colorful and jangly is intense. Lucky for you, plenty of items are within arm’s reach to accommodate: hip skirts or sparkly bracelets in magenta, blue, and green, perhaps? The owner of this tiny shop actually fell into the business by accident after her fashion-industry friends kept raving about the tunics and shawls she picked up while visiting her Pakistani husband’s family. Hello Sari sells a variety of these Middle Eastern tunics—from basic, solid-colored silks to intricate styles re-cut to accommodate a Western aesthetic. (The tenants of the building next door use them as curtains.) Other countries are represented too via jewelry from Egypt, belly dancing outfits from India, and wooly shawls from Kashmir.
