Profile

This venue is closed.

Set in a post-industrial corner of Bushwick, Hermitage is a throwback to a bygone era when independent printing presses were run by wayward poets and allied artists. Proprietor Jon Beacham buzzes customers up to his 450-square-foot loft by appointment only, showcasing an impressive collection of volumes contained within several modest bookshelves. Bemoaning the "idiot book listers" on the Internet, Beacham instead focuses on titles from long-gone players like Grove Press and New Directions, as well as limited- and first-edition incarnations of literary antiheroes (think Ezra Pound, Ted Berrigan, and Robert Creeley). When he's not entertaining visitors or scouring his secret sources for rare books, he hand-sets type for letterpress commissions on a fifties-era Vandercook proof press in the corner. To set the mood, jazz pours quietly from what might be the most modern thing in the space other than his computer: a Pro-Ject record player from the nineties.
