Profile
No copies or reissues here: Decorators, designers, and architects come to this narrow, high-ceilinged space to peruse owner Eve Kelly Herman's elegantly curated collection of original twentieth-century furniture. Herman says that much of her stock resembles the solidly constructed pieces that were part of her childhood home. (You’d be forgiven for wondering if this extends to the seven-foot-high Verner Panton hanging lamp, a showstopping cascade of shell and metal that retails for $25,000.) Most pieces come from dealers, auctions, and private clients, and Highland Park's Website lists tidbits about their historical context or origin; the curious can learn, for example, that the pair of Milo Baughman glass-topped steel end tables they've been eyeing once resided in San Francisco's Pan Pacific Hotel. You’ll get the unabridged provenance from Herman herself, though, who is only too happy to chat with browsers about rotating acquisitions like an Arne Jacobsen Series 3300 slate-blue sofa, a cowhide love seat by Hans Wegner, and sleek Kaj Franck vases. Those with shallower pockets are tactfully steered to Design Within Reach.
ExtraHighland Park also lends props to magazine editors producing photo shoots. Merchandise from the store has appeared in Architectural Digest, Real Simple, Country Living, and Domino.
