If you’re not exactly Project Runway material but still want to get behind a sewing machine, the crafty experts at Home Ec will teach you the tricks of the trade. The 2,000-square-foot space serves as a joint design studio for the owners of Park Slope boutique Flirt and a teaching center for classes like Sewing 101, pattern-making, alterations, and one-off projects like tote-bag-making. The concept was born in 2007, spurred on by creative-minded Flirt shoppers who were inspired by the store’s local designer wares. Eight sewing stations sit between peach and blue striped walls, and billowing red curtains separate the large classroom from more private nooks. In addition to group classes, Home Ec offers supervised “open studio” time on Tuesday evenings, when customers can rent a sewing machine and basic supplies in half-hour increments. Also, two trapezes are suspended from the fourteen-foot ceiling above the whirring machines—Flirt employee and screen printer Cecilia Grimm doubles as a trapeze artist, practicing and teaching classes in the space during off hours.
