Swags, tiebacks, Roman shades, brocades—shopping for window treatments, like choosing a sofa, presents a bewildering array of options, and can frustrate the most patient amateur decorator. But little in this business fazes the staff of Home Works, who can steer you through an amazing selection of fabrics, including brands like Pollack, Larsen, and Osborne & Little (at prices below retail), plus groovier choices from Arté, known for its bright geometric prints. (They'll even sell to-the-trade-only fabrics to nonprofessionals.) Low-key service is a big part of the appeal: Bring in a Polaroid or a sketch of the room in question, and the staff will walk you through exactly what you're looking for and how it can be put together. Fabrication of draperies or shades is extra, but there’s no design fee, and everything is made locally and delivered within six to eight weeks. All work is done in the Home Works warehouse, which means this family-run business can oversee all aspects of each job, from the initial order to the final consultation. Textiles from $30 to about $400 a yard.
