This specialty record store sells black metal and noise music exclusively, catering to a focused clientele seeking artists like Controlled Bleeding and The New Blockaders. The narrow shop is outfitted with blood-red walls and various noise memorabilia, like a broken guitar once played (while broken) by Macronympha. Though the few metal-buff employees are straight out of High Fidelity, the clientele is surprisingly diverse, ranging from “guys in suits who just got off work to guys with garbage bags on their heads,” according to owner Dominick Fernow, who also runs the Hospital Productions record label. Despite a large selection of vinyl and compact discs, the store mainly sells cassettes from a wall that holds around 1,000 tapes, making the spot a hub for the underground cassette culture. (Just don’t call them demos—Fernow says they’re “completed works.”) For those into its particular subgenres, the store is a sonic playground. If you’re new to black metal, however, then consider the giant oil painting of Lee Harvey Oswald at the store’s entrance your warning.
