Hülsta-Rolf Benz is the intelligent union of two well-established German furniture companies: Hülsta, a case-goods manufacturer from the north, and Rolf Benz, an upholstery furniture business from the south. Together, they represent a unified expression of German modernism. Their shared studio occupies an airy corner of the New York Design Center, where it opened in 2006. Mix-and-match modular components for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms combine high-gloss surfaces and stained wood elements for a look that is sleek without being cold; such designs add a pop of contrast to the soft, matte leather sofas of Rolf Benz. The 370 model cleverly shape shifts from bed to chaise to sofa to work table; the 6500 sofa is the crown jewel of the line, having been in production for over twenty years, and is available in nine colors.
