Milliner Ryan Wilde met jeweler Georgia Varidakis at Williamsburg’s Artists & Fleas market—their tables were placed side by side and they discovered that their wares attracted many of the same clientele. In 2011, they opened their small Williamsburg storefront-cum-studio, which is filled with jewelry and hats that combine twenties glamour with a slightly gothic appeal. Wilde’s eccentric, costume-worthy hats have been toned down since her first collection, though select pieces still sport subtle bird skulls, mink bones, and taxidermy squirrels. Varidakis complements the fedoras and forties hats with similarly elegant jewelry. Fan coral cuffs are both remarkable and wearable; the popular initial necklaces are dainty and surprisingly unique. A shared workspace in the back leads to a certain amount of cross-breeding—Wilde’s bones sometimes pop up in Varidakis’s rings, and feathers travel from one accessory to another. It also enables the artists to make alterations or whip up hats to suit a customer’s specific fancies on the spot.
