The name of this skillful custom-tailoring shop has a romantic history: In 1967, founder Bob Harpalani dubbed the place Imparali—his future wife’s last name—in an attempt to win her affection. Though the drab maroon carpet and off-the-beaten-path location (on the third floor of a nondescript Fifth Avenue building) isn’t necessarily impressive, the personal attention from owner Matt Harpalani (son of Bob) and the expertise of the three Chinese tailors make for a professional, efficient custom-suiting experience. Frequented mostly by young lawyers and bankers, the shop offers a range of sample books for creating customized wool suits (chic Dormeuil Amadeus with super 150, for example) and an array of cotton shirts ranging from pinpoint to Sea Island styles in stripes, solids, and twills. The suits come with elegant, durable Bemberg lining and perspiration guards, and accoutrements include monogramming, fancy ticket pockets (an old English trick), and accessories lapels with pick stitching. Garbardine hails from high-quality sources like Vitale Barberis Canonico, Versace, and Holland & Sherry, and Harpalani evaluates facial structure and body type to decide between peaked or notched lapels. Extra details on offer—like mitered cuffs, matched-up pinstripes, and colored thread—make this shop a standout.
