Graphic designer Drew Souza built IS from the ground up, literally. He conceived the "couture" stationery brand, created the fonts himself, and, when the store relocated from Chelsea to its current digs in 2003, co-designed the new space with architect Roger Hirsch (The mezzanine just above IS now serves as the pair’s shared design studio). Specializing in business cards and note-card sets, IS offers customized fonts and more than 50 kinds of cardstock. Shelves of colorful geometric-print cards, spiral notebooks and planners, and cleverly designed clocks border an orange accent wall, while leather portfolios, laptop bags, and totes from Italian home-office designer Nava hang against wooden slats. The color scheme of the modern, brightly lit space matches that of the bags, with a glowing, striped panel in orange, green, blue, and brown adorning the far wall. Souza designs new merchandise at least twice a year.
