The edgy side of high fashion finds a home at this SoHo boutique, which offers a mash-up of emergent streetwear with couture design. Collage-style dresses and jackets by Paulo Casalini, Indian skirts crafted in supple corduroy with embroidery and sequins by Amnesia, and silky assemblages by Chan Luu are among the selection, along with houndstooth wool pleated miniskirts, pink fur jackets with hook and eyelet closures, and velvet peasant tops. Crochet, mesh, leather, and mohair accents all make appearances among the reconstructed garments, rhinestoned jeans, and wool suit jackets made funky with exposed seams and threads. The jewelry, accessories, and shoes reflect a similar sensibility: Institut is big on pearls, snakeskin, and metallic leathers.
