Inspired by the gold jewelry sold in Istanbul’s street markets, Ivy Mamet, a former design director for sporting-goods apparel company Everlast Worldwide, opened Jaalber Jewelry in the summer of 2007 on a quiet block with three other pint-sized jewelry stores. The Byzantine-inspired, 24-karat designs in the shop’s three slim display cases are hand-crafted in Turkey. Oversized, gold-framed mirrors on each wall reflect stacked rings, layered necklaces, and bangle bracelets, all glimmering with precious stones. Heavy amethyst teardrops, delicate gold hoops, dramatic gemstone slabs, and gold bands inlaid with emeralds have intricate detailing and are made using traditional methods, such as granulation, sawing, and painting. A ring designed by Sevan, for example, features a hand-carved and hand-painted ruby surrounded by thousands of tiny porcelain tiles. The shop’s designers will also transform clients’ outdated or unwanted jewelry into new designs.
