Nestled just below street level on a corner across from the Village Apothecary, Jean-Michel Cazabat’s shoe store marks the point where Bleecker becomes a mini-Fifth Avenue line of shops. Yet in typical West Village fashion, the store feels more like an intimate living room that just happens to be decorated with high-end footwear (see the fireplace, cushy red lounge chairs, and coffee-table books). Unlike Saks, Barneys, and other retailers that carry his product, the shop stocks Cazabat’s full lines for both men and women—there are color-blocked flats and suede loafer pumps for chic working girls, glittery heels and flashy boots for nightlife darlings, and crocodile boots and buckled loafers for style-conscious men. Like Cazabat, the shoes are unapologetically French—bold, confident, and refined—and this holds true of the small selection of exotic-skin handbags, too.
