Susan Grunberg and Ruth Weiss, childhood pals from Israel and longtime New Yorkers, like to brag that Calvin Klein and Barneys followed them to Madison Avenue, where they opened up this women’s jewelry shop back in 1987. Their cute, closet-size shop with one mini, arched window may not be quite as chichi as its neighbors, but it is stockpiled with a truly eclectic array of gold, silver, and platinum pieces with colorful precious and semiprecious stone accents. The owners handpick some of the baubles while traveling, like the cameos they collected in Naples; mostly, though, Weiss fashions pieces from jewels and other materials purchased abroad, such as rose-cut diamonds from India and natural shells from Australia. Most of the designs are glitzy and fun, including store staples like “candy” earrings with gumdrop-like stones and thin wedding bands lined with jewels in a rainbow of shades. No two pieces are alike, and custom items are happily crafted according to a customer’s wishes.
