Artist and goldsmith Joan Michlin’s jewelry gallery and boutique is a sliver of calm nestled in a bustling block dominated by capacious designer outlets and restaurants. Having built a following through her regular stops at national art fairs, Michlin draws a discerning clientele to view her collections of modern, deco-inspired pieces in mixed golds (yellow, rose, and white), diamonds, and semi-precious stones, with new creations released three or four times a year. Displayed behind austere, mahogany cases, geometric-inspired bracelets are topped with blue-green topaz or multicolored stones; a ring crafted of shiny rose and yellow gold is studded with small, regularly spaced diamonds—a strong fashion statement, to be sure, but not too overt to slip under a pair of gloves, or to turn palm-inward for subway safety. For men, Michlin crafts unique tuxedo studs and cufflinks, some with mother of pearl and onyx inlay. In addition, she offers a unique selection of modern wedding bands and engagement rings, most of which can be customized; from the simple, unisex white and yellow gold Interlock and the intricate, diamond-encrusted Odyssey.
