J.F. Rey Eyewear
American Express, Diners Club, Discover, MasterCard, Visa
Although this high-end optical store boasts enough designer names to rival Barney's—including Armani and Prada—its name-dropping frames and sunglasses selection offers far more than meets the eye. Since 1984, its staff of opticians has worked meticulously to fit each client with the perfect pair of specs or contacts, while French-born founder Joël Name personally waits on regular clients. Shopping for glasses here is like spending an hour at the MAC counter, since Name considers his services more cosmetic than optometric; the minimalist, boutique-sized shop stocks an ample library of amber, tortoise, and rimless frames, and a sizeable selection of regular and colored contact lenses, from violet to honey hues, for eyewear that’s as much style statement as vision aid. Name’s signature line channels the owner’s understated Parisian elegance with its streamlined designs and geometric shapes. While the shop mainly focuses on prescription eyewear, the handful of customers who come in seeking readers will find a readied tray. Plan to have a vision exam before shopping at Joël Name, though, since that service isn't offered.
