John Pomp was introduced to glassblowing by a high-school teacher and soon became so passionate about the craft that he was breaking into the studio after hours to blow glass till dawn. Now renowned for his elegant, organic glassware, he runs his own Williamsburg studio space, where he handcrafts and sells the curvaceous, brightly colored glassware for which he’s made his name. A small, white-shelved retail area up front holds Pomp’s trademark vases, stemware, and drinking glasses; from here, customers can watch Pomp—or any of the other students or artisans who rent the space—sweat away before a line of flame-licked furnaces. Pomp also does custom jobs on commission, and those who really want a unique product can take matters into their own hands by registering for one of the courses or workshops offered by One Sixty Glass (onesixtyglass.com), Pomp’s educational glassblowing program that shares the space.
