Julie Haus-Alkire learned how to sew and construct patterns when she was 13 under the watchful eye of her dressmaker grandmother, and this legacy is evident in her New York-based clothing label, Julie Haus, which offers women's wear with unique structures and intricate details. She co-founded the label with her husband, artist Jason Alkire, and in her first stand-alone boutique, the offerings are displayed against a backdrop of Victorian-style art, re-purposed 1970s furniture and gilded picture frames that the two of them gleaned from flea markets and retro furniture stores across the city. The clothes, made in New York using premium fabric from the garment district, share interesting, geometric structures and statement details. Expect items like a super-short perforated leather skater skirt, a cropped wool jacket adorned with leather strips and a cashmere braid, floaty silk pants with a lamb leather belt, and a draped silk Grecian-style dress that is a popular pick for wedding guests and can be custom made in a range of colors. The store also carries 20s-style cashmere hats by Gigi Burris, Christine Ettelson’s knit jewelry, and the label’s diffusion line, J/J.
