Jutta Neumann is a true global creature: Born in Germany, she’s lived in Paris, works in New York, and has a huge following in Japan. Known for her hand-crafted leather sandals, bags and wrist cuffs, Neumann learned her trade the traditional way, over years as an apprentice, before opening her own, old-world-feeling studio. Most days find Neumann at the shop, moving between the retail area up front and her workshop at rear. Designs are earthy and sturdy, of supple-but-strong leathers built to take a beating; the soles of some shoes are made of wooden blocks. But while the shape of her pieces may favor classic lines, Neumann’s not shy to use current, trendier materials and palettes, as most products can be found in bright colors or patterned skins. For sandals, personalized orders start with a tracing of your foot (and notations of your stylistic wishes); a customized pair arrives four to six weeks later.
