If you’re looking for a well-built, low-flash handbag that’s still big on style—no blazing logos or signatures but loaded with confident class— Kazuyo Nakano’s offerings will fit the bill. This Soho store is packed with pocketbook options, from streamlined leather shoulder bags and canvas totes to tightly sewn clutches in bright colors and large hobos with perforated details. Known for using high-quality leathers in traditional neutrals and unusual hues like mustard, burgundy, and salmon pink, Kyoto-based designer Nakano also produces seasonal items such as kimono-inspired fabric clutches or flower-adorned summer totes. Most devotees, however, started out with something from the signature Mondano collection of structured, modular, coated-leather bags with big pockets. I just visited Kazuyo Nakano's shop today and bought a bag. I have been to the shop half a dozen times before; I make a point of stopping there during my visits to NYC, to see the new designs. Ms. Nakano was at the shop and helped me make my purchase-- a treated raffia hobo with leather handles and subtle metal detailing. While the bag was far from inexpensive, at about 300 dollars, it is incredibly well-made, practical, and will hold all of my essentials. It's the perfect city summer bag! I would buy more KN bags if my budget afforded it! For now, I am enjoying this one, as well as the experience of talking to the designer about my purchase. I appreciated the personal service and excellent quality!
