KC Art Supplies & Framing, Inc.
Unlike Manhattan behemoths Pearl Paint, A.I. Friedman, and Lee’s Art Shop, Brooklyn’s KC Art Supplies & Framing Inc. isn’t the kind of art superstore that’s as much maze as art supply. Rather, this neighborhood retailer is a small-scale, manageable source for artists of all kinds, from aspiring to established. Set back from the corner of Kane and Court Streets, just a block away from the bustle of Smith Street’s restaurant row, KC caters to the neighborhood’s diverse residents, from ‘expat’ East Village artistes and budding T-shirt designers to three year-olds whose parents swear they’ve spawned the next Matisse. The knowledgeable staff can guide you through the selection of fine-art raw materials—canvas, inks, pigment, brushes and other essentials—crafting provisions, ready-made picture frames, papers, notecards, prints and posters. In addition to carrying such standard fare as PrismaColor pencils and markers, bakeable Fimo modeling clay, and Strathmore papers, the shop sells artfully designed home accessories like delicate paper lanterns and sculptural candlesticks. KC also offers custom framing services and to-order printing of stationery, invitations and announcements on Crane’s paper.
