Opened in 1996 by New York-based milliner Kelly Christy, this intimate shop specializes in stylish, vintage looks for men and women--felt porkpies, close-fitted cloches, fedoras and sisal portrait sunhats, decorated with grosgrain ribbon, antique feathers, bunches of glossy enamel cherries, or delicate dried rosebuds. Though the men's hats are dapper in a Frank Sinatra meets Humphrey Bogart sort of way, hats for women rule the roost; the retro creations, evocative of early Hollywood glamour, are still quirky enough to feel modern. A few styles evoke Christy's fine-art life; her work has been shown at the Cooper-Hewitt and on Broadway, as well as on the catwalk, in commissions for Isaac Mizrahi and Diane von Furstenburg. Particularly lovely are the gauzy, sumptuous bridal veils, many adorned with pearls and rosettes. Custom everyday hats can be ready within three weeks; bridal veils, which include a preliminary consultation, are a shop specialty, well worth the investment for a piece of wearable textile art.
