Khadda Madani displays her eponymous line of artistic, arresting dresses and twisted jewelry in her Lower East Side showroom. The white, gallerylike space draws attention to the pleated, voluminous clothing—tucked here, billowing there—and statement-making jewelry. Dresses and skirts dominate the racks lining opposite sides of the store, with bright silks and cotton blends for spring and heavier black and charcoal-gray wools for fall. The inventiveness is in the shapely silhouettes; in place of elaborate beading or embroidery, you’ll find a restrained sliver of neon fabric or a strip of lace. Elaborate necklaces hang against the bare white walls like art, showcasing snaking, knotted wires, large candy-colored stones, and delicate chains. Bold cocktail rings are displayed on various pedestals and across an antique piano in back. Madani mans the shop herself—occasionally with one of her small children in tow—and offers on-site alterations on any of the one-of-a-kind frocks.
