Attention Kmart shoppers! True, you didn’t move to the big city just to roam the aisles of a discount monolith like Kmart, but skipping it altogether means missing out on the pleasures, bargains and pure ease it provides. The three-story Herald Square flagship (access directly from Penn Station) provides one-stop shopping for food, clothing and shelter. While fashion-conscious shoppers—okay, simply conscious shoppers, too—will want to avoid most of the women’s attire, the men’s section includes hipster-ready Dickies apparel, and dogged bargain hunters may find knock-offs of some of the latest designer trends. Where the store really excels, however, is in home products, much of it Martha’s Everyday collection: Bedding, towels, mirrors, frames, lamps, kitchen necessities, small appliances, bathroom accessories and even paint and assembly-required furniture boast the tasteful Martha aesthetic and stamp of approval. With hardware, sporting goods, baby supplies, electronics, toy and gardening departments, plus a pharmacy and grocery store, Kmart combines aspects of Duane Reade, Toys R Us, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Circuit City, Modell’s and the Food Emporium to create one uber-superstore of convenience. Now all you have to do is figure out how to get everything home.
