Barely bigger than a newsstand, this sleek Flatiron shop offers an array of artisanal chocolates and other high-end treats. Opened in 2008, the retail nook grew out of the wholesale business longtime chocolatier Eric Girerd runs with his wife, supplying chocolates to Ritz-Carlton and W hotels. Girerd’s creations are neatly arranged under the shop’s shiny glass counter. The little brown squares decorated in various colors come in exotic flavors, many of them Asian-inspired—though they’re manufactured in New Jersey. Among the choices are saffron, orchid, jasmine, tiramisu, citronelle, and the especially popular fleur de sel (sea salt), and ylang-ylang (a fragrant island flower). The shop sells gift boxes with 4, 10, 24, or 33 chocolates of any flavor, or customers can request custom packages, like an assortments of herb- or perfume-flavored chocolates. A side cabinet displays limited-run chocolates from foreign countries such as Peru and Tanzania, as well as other gourmet treats like jalapeño jam, muscadine grapes, macaroons, and caviar.
