La Brea stocks a combination of kitschy souvenirs and novelty items for New Yorkers with a low-brow sense of humor. So next to the Empire State Building paperweight, magnet or postcard, you’re likely to chance upon a bobble head Sigmund Freud doll perfect for the grad student or analysand in everyone. Cheesy T-shirts bearing such slogans as World’s Coolest Dad, Whatever…, and of course, I [heart] NY, are the only clothing items sold here, but in the end, candles, frames, photo albums and calendars make far better housewarming gifts, for hosts or guests with tongues firmly in cheek. Beware, feckless shoppers or parents of small children: Narrow aisles mean congested traffic for people picking out birthday, anniversary and greeting cards, and eminently breakable mugs and dishes are often precariously placed. In addition to cheesy gag gifts, La Brea also sells mood-music CDs from cool clubs like Karma Lounge and Buddha Bar.
