Sensing an opportunity after noticing the repeatedly long lines at Murray’s Cheese Shop, Joseph Lamarca opened his own version across town in 1974. Located next to his eponymous Italian restaurant, the shop’s wide selection of domestic and international flavors ranges from Vermont cheddar, Manchego, Gruyere and fresh mozzarella to more unique finds like semi-soft Morbier and a northern Italian Stelvio. All cheeses are aged on premises; the selection changes often. But lunch breakers, many of them SVA students, come for the hearty Italian sandwiches, salads, or pastas, which are available in five styles of freshly cut dough and with seven homemade sauces.
